More on Multiplication & Division

Refer to Math Workbook 2A Part 1 page 90. Working was presented wrongly in this example. They do not need to do the long division method. At their level,  they need to understand the division concept and show the division statement correctly.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Number of groups & the number of items in each group

When we are solving word problems on Division, the question will either ask for the "number of groups" or "the number of items in each group". Let's take a look at an example of how the division statements for 15÷3=5 and 15÷5=3 will take on different word problems.

1) There are 15 peanuts.
Max puts the peanuts equally onto 3 plates.
How many peanuts are there on each plate? [Number of items in each group]

2) There are 15 peanuts.
Max puts them equally onto some plates.
There are 5 peanuts on each plate.
How many plates are there? [Number of groups]

Multiplication Tables of 2 and 3 *Updated*

This post is updated on 31 March.

Click here to see the first post on Multiplication and Division.

This week, the children revised the concept of multiplication using hula-hoops.
The hula-hoops represented the number of groups and the children must stand in the hula-hoops according to my given mathematical sentence. It is important to know the difference between "groups of 3" and "3 groups".

10 groups

8 groups of 1

8 groups of 3

More items used for showing multiplication & division.

Cupcakes cups and beans
Straws

Tongue depressors

Wooden chopsticks

Yakult straws

Commonly-made mistake in Primary 1 for Division

This particular example may not appear in Primary 2 work but understanding this mathematics concept is important.

Let's look at this example below:

Question: Circle the handbags into 5 equal groups.

In mathematical form, it can be rephrased as 5 groups of ______.

The commonly-made mistake is to count 5 handbags and group them in a group. We cannot put 5 handbags in each group, as we do not know how many handbags there are in a group.
I've taught the children to write in the following manner.

After writing, the diagram should look like this:

Then, the children need to remember to group them in their respective groups. Circle all the handbags in group 1, circle all the handbags in group 2, do the same for group 3, 4 and 5. It should look like this:

Let's go back to the mathematical phrase: 5 groups of _______. Check, did I circle 5 groups? How many handbags do I have in each group?

Answer: 5 groups of 3

Guiding Questions

Hi Parents! :)

Here is a list of questions that can be used to prompt the children so as to encourage further thinking. These questions can be used for almost all subjects and not just for English.
Thanks for reading! :)

Prior knowledge on Multiplication

In Term 2, we will not dwell too much on the concept of multiplication as groups of items and the concept of division as sharing or dividing a set of items equally so that each group has the same number of items. We will be doing more practices on Multiplication Tables of 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10. That
said, we have to ensure that the children are familiar with the concepts of multiplication and division.

Here's a glimpse into their Primary One lesson on Multiplication. To show the concept of groups and items, equal number of pupils stand in each hula-hoop while some pupils write number sentences/ statements regarding the activity. Magnetic counters (as shown in the first photograph) were used to illustrate the class activity.

Group/ Individual tasks include using rubber bands and beans/ marbles to show the groups and items concept. You can use household items such as rubber bands, plastic bowls, cups, ice-cream sticks, straws, wooden chopsticks, buttons that are easily available for the same activity.

Thank you!

Dear Parents

Ms Nuzul and I were very thankful that you took time off your busy schedule to meet us.

Some parents raised their concerns about sibling rivalry at home that leads to anger.

As promised, I have uploaded this article below which hopefully will tackle the issue of anger management.

Homework on 8th March 2012

The children will need to complete the following by 19th March 2012 :

  1. Learning Sheets (Unit 5: Beware of the Cat) pg 10 to 12
  2. Math WB Practice 1: How To Multiply (pg 85 to 90)
  3. Math WB Review 2 (pg 91, 92 + Corrections)

Feedback on Topical Review 3

The first 3 questions are known as Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQs). Pupils are awarded marks based on the correct answers. No marks are given to the working but pupils are encouraged to work out the answers if necessary.

Many children made a mistake on Question 2 when they wrote (a) as the answer. This question tests their concept of finding a whole from 2 parts (Click HERE to read about part-whole model drawing). My assumption is that the children did not analyse the other options. It is recommended that they do an elimination of the options by crossing out the ones which are not the answer.

The last question is a 2-step word problem. The answer for Question (5b) is dependent on Question (5a). If the answer is wrong in (5a), the final answer will be affected too. Therefore, it costs some children a great deal of marks. :( Most children made a mistake here due to:

  • Transfer error

  • No answers in the ovals

  • Not seeing the link between the 2 models
Do go through the Review Paper with your child. Get him/ her to explain the mistakes made and give suggestions on what he/ she could have done.

Thanks for your attention.

Multiplication & Division

Dear Parents

We have started the topic 'Multiplication & Division' today.
The children will need to know:

  • Multiplication means repeated addition

  • Division means sharing equally

  • The word 'each' means one

  • The symbols of '×' and '÷' and its meaning

  • In 3 x 2 = 6, the first factor '3' is known as 'group'. We read as 3 groups of 2 (items).

  • Mulitplication tables of 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10

  • Solve 1-step word problems involving multiplication and division within the multiplication tables
Exclude division with remainder.

We revised these concepts today:

  • 6 + 6 + 6 = 18

  • 6 + 6 + 6 = 3 groups of 6

  • 6 + 6 + 6 = 3 sixes

  • 6 + 6 + 6 = 3 x 6 = 18
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The purpose of the dot paper in the Math textbook is for the children to conceptualise the concept of 'group and items'. Multiplication array and the commutative aspect of the multiplication sentence (5 times 2 = 2 times 5) also apply. I will explain the shortcut next time. Before children see the pictorial form, introduce to them using authentic materials like:

I have to credit the canteen vendors for keeping the egg cartons for me. Keep those plastic egg trays from supermarket too. They come in 4s, 6s, 10s, 12s etc. You'll never see egg trays in the same way again!

I was introduced to this game (see photo below) when I was young. I think it kind of help me to see the multiplication array. Here's the link to the virtual game:

NLB Mass Borrowing

Dear Parents

The National Library Board (NLB) will be coming to our school for mass borrowing on 7 March 2012. A letter regarding this will be given out tomorrow.

Do remind your children to bring their school or NLB library card or EZ link card.

Pupils will need to return their books to the public libraries.

Thank you.

Corrections for Assignments

I would like to reinforce what I told the children about their corrections. You can help by looking through the completed pages. Look through each mistake carefully (check the front page  for the corrections) and ensure that your child understands why the answers were not accepted. Most of the time, the children repeat the same mistakes in their tests as they only focus on lots of drill and practice without revising their mistakes.
I would appreciate if you can read the pages with my remarks. I've painstakingly written remarks on most of their work targeting their mistakes. It will be great to check your child's corrections very regularly, so that you'll be aware of his/ her misconceptions as well. That's probably the most timely feedback about your child's work.

Thank you very much!

Collective Nouns

Today, the children learnt about Collective Nouns

What is a Collective Noun?

A Collective Noun (also known as Group Noun) refers to a group of people or animals or even objects together.

Here is a list of Collective Nouns/ Group Nouns :

> a herd of elephants
> a band of musicians
> a flight of stairs
> a collection of stamps
> a pack of wolves
> a block of flats
> a swarm of bees
> a bunch of keys/grapes
>a class of students
>a team of players

Please do take note that this list is not exhaustive.

Thanks for reading!

[NOTE: I'll embed the link to the google spreadsheet tomorrow, 2 March]

Dear Parents

Please indicate your preferred timing on the link to this google spreadsheet. Your inputs are saved automatically.

For the ease of logistics, I've given priority to pupils with siblings in this school.

To be fair to all, email requests with regards to this will not be entertained.
However, if you can't make it on that day, do email me for a change of the date.

Just a gentle reminder, I believe we can exercise mutual respect to each other's entry made on the google spreadsheet. Please refrain from editing entries made by other parents.

Thank you.

Sincerely,
Miss Huang
