Commonly-made mistake in Primary 1 for Division

This particular example may not appear in Primary 2 work but understanding this mathematics concept is important.

Let's look at this example below:

Question: Circle the handbags into 5 equal groups.

In mathematical form, it can be rephrased as 5 groups of ______.

The commonly-made mistake is to count 5 handbags and group them in a group. We cannot put 5 handbags in each group, as we do not know how many handbags there are in a group.
I've taught the children to write in the following manner.

After writing, the diagram should look like this:

Then, the children need to remember to group them in their respective groups. Circle all the handbags in group 1, circle all the handbags in group 2, do the same for group 3, 4 and 5. It should look like this:

Let's go back to the mathematical phrase: 5 groups of _______. Check, did I circle 5 groups? How many handbags do I have in each group?

Answer: 5 groups of 3
